About This Location

Huntington Central Park is a 350-acre urban park in the heart of Huntington Beach that serves as Orange County's most important inland birding site. The park's mature trees, lakes, restored wetlands, and the adjacent Shipley Nature Center create a green oasis that attracts Pacific Flyway migrants and supports a rich resident bird community.

The Shipley Nature Center's 18-acre restored wetland and native plant garden is the birding epicenter, with boardwalks providing access to riparian, freshwater marsh, and oak woodland habitats. Spring brings migrating Wilson's Warblers, Western Tanagers, and Black-headed Grosbeaks to the canopy, while the lakes attract herons, egrets, and migrant waterfowl. Resident specialties include California Gnatcatcher in the coastal sage scrub and Nuttall's Woodpecker in the oaks.
